My catfishing partner
and I decided to try juglines at Lake Lewisville for catfish.,
we made three jug lines and went to set them out. On the way to the ramp
my partner asks me what we are going to bait them with. I showed him the
Rednecks Catfish Bait Soap and after he stopped laughing he
bet me a case of beer that it would not catch a thing. Being a non-believer,
he picked up some shad and decided we would bait the top hook with shad
and the bottom with soap. The juglines were in the water only 90 minutes
due to incoming weather when we decided to pick them up. Top hooks had one
small blue cat less than 2 pounds. Bottom hooks had one blue catfish at
4-1/2 pounds and one fine 14 pound catfish. Being in late June 2003, it
was hot and that beer sure tasted good.

Redneck's Catfish Bait Soap is a homemade
catfish bait that is handmade one batch at a time in Saginaw Texas. Our
Catfish Bait is made from a 65 year old catfish bait recipe that was designed
to be used for catfish bait, and not for washing with. The first thing people
usually ask me is "Is it really soap?" and the answer is yes,
it really is. But it is not like a traditional soap that you would use for
washing your clothes or body with, as it is much softer so it will go on
a hook and not crumble, and it is packed with fish attractants to draw the
fish in and get them to bite, that's the difference between soap and catfish
bait soap.
People have been fishing with soap for
years. Many of them were homemade recipes that were made on ranches and
farms throughout the south, and then later in years many began using a popular
soap made by proctor and gamble or "p&g soap" but it is no
longer made.
 Procter
and Gamble or "P&G Soap" was a commonly used catfish bait
among catfishermen back when it was in production. Times changed and so
did their recipe. P&G Soap was no longer available, but Redneck's Catfish
Bait Soap is available, and it is just as good as the old fashioned P&G
Soap Bait. Many fishermen try to use other commercial soaps available at
grocery stores and markets today as a catfish bait but they don't catch
fish with them, that's because they don't have what the right ingredients
and the right consistancy!

There are a few other soaps that are sold
commercially in grocery stores for washing clothes and bathing that people
attempt to use as bait with poor results, because they do not have the right
texture, and ingredients! There are also a few imitations out there, we
are flattered, because when you make a good product, people try to copy

Soap is a very commonly used bait throughout
the south, it is just that catfishermen run in fairly tight circles, and
usually stay pretty tight lipped about what they are catching their fish

on, but it also contains a variety of ingredients that attract the catfish

calling or emailing me wanting to know what is in the bait, it is a family
secret and we don't share the recipe or ingredients with anyone!)
The best thing about the bait (other than
the fact that it is one of the few catfish baits that actually work) is
that it smells great. It has a scent of Anise, known to be a proven catfish
attractant. There is no "stink" to it, it really does smell good.
There are a number of other scents and ingredients added to the bait as
well that the fish will smell but you won't. Just think, you can come home
from your trip after fishing for catfishing and not smell like a sewer,
and your wife will let you back in the house again because you will not
stink like some catfish stink bait!
The bait is also very clean and simple
to use. You simply cut the catfish bait bar into pieces and stick them on
a hook. It does not require a treble hook, in fact it works best
with a plain old straight shank hook (kahle hooks, octopus hooks and circle
hooks are most commonly used here in Texas). There is no molding to do or
forming bait balls or any of that mess, just cut a chunk and push the hook
tip into the chunk of catfish bait until the hook tip is barely exposed
through the top.
The bait stays on the hook very well. It
does not fall off or get shaken/knocked off by fish or water current. It
is an excellent bait for catfish in rivers and creeks with strong currents!

I set a 45 hook trotline at Lake Conroe.
On the original set I didn't have any cut bait I was planning to use so
I used Redneck's Catfish Bait Soap. The original intent was to rebait that
night with cut shad/perch, my choice wintertime bait, but the wind got up
and I was unable to run the lines until the following day. I ran the lines
and took off 22 channels and 2 nice blues, and rebaited with cut shad which
produced 16 fish. I next baited with live perch and took off 18 fish. On

I set out bank lines Saturday on the Guadalupe
River and tore the catfish up between 4pm and 12 midnight. Limited out on
blue's and channels with three yellow catfish. Then woke up around 5am and
caught 37 more before calling it a day at 9am that morning. Great days on
the guadalupe river. I caught my biggest blue cat ever around 26 lbs and
had three yellas going over 15 lbs with one over 20 lbs. Lots of catfish.

Another advantage is the cost. If you do

There is no preperation to using
Redneck's Catfish Bait. You simply remove the bar of catfish bait from the
convenient resealable package, and cut it into chunks. Plain old fishing
hooks will work, you don't have to mess with springs, sponges, treble hooks,
bait bags or anything else. The catfish soap bait just goes right on the
hook.
You can cut the catfish bait
soap into chunks as your using it or before you go fishing for catfish.
The Catfish Bait Soap is easy to cut so there is no hassle to cutting it
while your fishing.
Redneck's Catfish Bait Soap Should
be cut into chunks tailored to the size hook your using. It doesn't take
much. A dime sized chunk of bait works perfect for a 3/0 Size J hook like
are commonly used on trotlines and juglines.
If your using a larger hook, you'll
need a larger chunk of catfish bait. A chunk of catfish bait about the size
of a quarter works great for hooks sized 4/0 and 5/0. Remember to always
use the smallest possible hook that you can. Many catfishermen that fish
commercially will use a Size 1 Stainless Steel hook on their trotlines and
juglines. These small hooks are great for eating sized fish, and smaller
hooks require less catish bait, even smaller than a dime sized piece. |
Once you have cut the catfish bait
soap chunk you simply take your hook and push the hook tip into the catfish
bait soap until the tip of the hook barely comes through the other side.
That is all there is to it. The catfish bait soap goes on the hook easily
and it stays on the hook once you put it there. The catfish bait soap does
not fall of the hook or get easily shaken off a trotline or jugline like
